Structures is een work in progress, een serie tekeningen waarin ik architectuur en ruimtelijkheid op een artistieke manier benader. Deze tekeningen vormen een index van categorieën waarin verschillende architecturale vormen worden bestudeerd. Deze categorieën verwijzen vaak naar een modernistische beeldtaal, zoals die gevonden kan worden in bijvoorbeeld Bauhaus, de Stijl of fuctionalisme. Wat de afbeeldingen voorstellen is echter onduidelijk. Zijn het gebouwen, sculpturen, meubels of gebruiksvoorwerpen? Op structurele wijze ondermijnen, verhullen of saboteren de tekeningen hun betekenis en functie. Objecten zijn beschadigd, onscherp, of ingepakt; functionele constructies hebben hun functie verloren; modernistische dogma's en regels zijn gebroken.
Structures is a work in progress, a series of drawings in which I approach architecture, sculpture and space in an artistic manner. I don’t draw buildings, but rather constructions that bare resemblance to architecture. The drawings form an index of different architectural forms and principles. These categories, nearly always, refer to a modernist visual language, as can be found in movements such as Bauhaus, De Stijl, Suprematism, or Functionalism. What the objects and constructions they depict are supposed to be and how they are supposed to function is obscured though. Are these buildings, sculptures, furniture or tools? The drawings structurally confuse, undermine or even sabotage meaning and function. Objects are damaged, out-of-focus, or worn-down; functionalist constructions have lost their function; dogma’s and rules are broken.
